A Medieval Period European "Wakefield" Short Sword with Scabbard
"The original of this sword is in the Tower of London Armory and is believed to be English, dating from about 1460. A very similar sword was found on the site of the Battle of Wakefield and this sword is named after that bloody conflict. Men at arms and archers carried all types of sidearms, axes, hammers, mauls and swords. This particular sword is a very effective weapon for hand-to-hand combat. Broad single-edged blade give it a good cutting power yet it also tapers sharply to a very deadly point. Short swords of this type proved themselves very effective in the close deadly confusion of the melee. Without the room to maneuver or use any fancy tricks, the common soldier was forced to hack, ship, and stab...all three of which this sword could do very well.
"
The blade is 28 inches long and 1-3/4 inches wide. T
he overall length is
33-3/4
inches. It weighs 2-3/4 lb.
The sword appears unused but has some darkening on the steel guard and handle and some rust on the scabbard tip, as shown in the photos.
The belt hanger looks to be made from auto seatbelt strapping. It's solid.
