A Damascus Viking Sword with Scabbard
28-3/4 inch blade, 2 inches wide, 34-3/4 inches overall
"The Vikings lived in a cold, harsh world where a man's survival could depend on his sword. But when they erupted into Europe, they did so with a fire that burned their legacy across the continent, and with swords that even today stand among the finest ever made.  In the early days the Vikings made their swords by welding small pieces of metal together until they produced a piece large enough for a blade.  Swords produced this way were hard, tough, and flexible, capable of withstanding the punishment of combat.  But the blades were also beautiful creations.  The damascus pattern was left visible in the fuller while the outer portions of the blade were polished, producing a striking visual contrast.  Since Viking styles did not change much, this magnificent sword is of a style that could have been found in use from the early 8th century until well into the 11th.  Quick, fast and flexible, this sword would have been an heirloom blade any warrior would have been proud to own.  Both the pommel and guard a damascus and the grip is leather over wood.  The exceptional scabbard is wood covered with brown leather, with a bronze throat, tip and reinforcing bands, plus its own belt attachment."
The sword is in the box and appears to have never been handled or displayed. It remains in as-new condition.
